Habits are part and parcel of the human mind. When Stephen Covey published his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, in 1989, I was amongst the first set of readers. He asked me to give a talk in what we used to call the “colloquium,” an informal gathering of scientists every month.

At the base of the seven habits are two ideas. One is “paradigm shift” saying that two people can see the same thing and yet differ with each other. The second is “maturity continuum” saying that at birth, everybody is dependent and grows out of it till adulthood.

A failure in any of the three stages – Dependence, Independence and Interdependence – results in immaturity.

These are: (1) Be proactive; (2) Begin with the end in mind; and (3) First things first; Together, these three habits constitute the process of self-mastery.

The next three habits talk about Interdependence, your ability to work with others. The last habit is that of continuous improvement based on the Japanese concept of “Kaizen.” It is called: (7) Sharpen the Sword, (७) धार देना, calling for regularly renewing your resources, energy and health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle.

Covey contrasts it with the scarcity mindset, which is founded on the idea that if someone else wins or is successful in a situation, it means you lose, and in the process promotes destructive and unnecessary competition.

He said in that about “three poisons” – craving, anger, and delusion. We must purge them out to become effective in life. These poisons cloud our perception of a situation — we filter people and events through them and react to turn any interaction acrimonious and unpleasant. “

You can only replace one habit with another. English writer Samuel Johnson declared, “The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.”
